In case the title was a bit... confusing, I'll clarify a bit.
Long, long ago, back in ancient china...
There lived a man who went by the name of "The yellow Emperor". I'm not sure why he was called that exactly, but long story short:
He's credited with creating the system of acupuncture treatment, which is the use of tiny needles to influence the tiny electromagnetic lines of energy that run through out the body, called meridians.
Anyway, he stated that for a person to live a long and healthy life, we must live in harmony with the seasons.
Now.
What does it mean to live in harmony with the seasons?
Well....
The ancient chinese sages noticed that the energy levels of man seemed to change and mimic the five seasons. In other words:
Winter: A time for scaling back activity and regeneration( Hibernation)
Spring: the time when things are blossoming and growing
Summer: Everything is reaching full maturity; activity is at it's peak; the days are long, and the energy in the atmosphere is highest.
Indian Summer: Things start to cool down, the days start to get shorter
Fall: Things are coming to an end, the trees are turning from green to brown, it's a time of dying.
You can remember all this really neat stuff later, but for now, what you really want to focus on is what the Yellow Emperor has to say about working about in the summer.
Without getting too complicated, Summertime is connected with the Fire element, which is connected with the heart. According to the Yellow Emperor, it's during these 3 months of summer that the heart is at it's strongest.
It's during this time that you want to work out, to take advantage of the high energy streaming from the sun to bolster your own energy levels to help you lose excess weight and get stronger.
Another awesome thing about the heat is that is causes you to relax, which in turn improves circulation, which in turn helps all those nutrients from that health food that your eating get to where they need to get to to keep you healthy.
Setting aside all this good stuff about exercising in the heat:
1) Stay hydrated!!!
2) If possible, find a nice shaded spot to workout in!!!
3) Listen to your body and know your limits!!!
4) Children should be kept cool if they are working out in the heat, especially because they sweat very little and as such, don't have the ability to cool off as well as we adults do.
The ancient Chinese sages (doctors) devised a whole system of treatment based on the five seasons and the principles of Yin ( contracting, moving inward, cool lie the moon) and Yang ( expansive, moving outward, hot like the sun).
If you're interested in learning more about treatment using the 5 seasons, then head to the library and spend some time reading the book:
"The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine"
It takes a little study and re-reading to understand what they are talking about, but you'll find that it's well worth the effort.
